An operating system for knowledge organisations

Merydian

An integrated working environment for knowledge-based organisations: documents, projects, communication, CRM, HR and payroll, live broadcasts, and networking and meeting tools in a single system. It was built because no off-the-shelf tool matched the way a think tank works.

01Situation

The starting point and the task

An analytical organisation works with more than a dozen tools at once: documents in one, projects in another, contacts in a third, broadcasts in a fourth. Every switch costs time, and knowledge is scattered across systems. NES needed a single environment that mirrors a think tank's work cycle, from the first note to the broadcast.

02Actions

Actions, step by step

6 steps in the order in which the project was built.

  1. Mapping the NES work cycle onto modules in four areas

Communication and broadcasting, planning and coordination, relationship development, operations and organisational governance.

  2. Content layer

A block editor, a code editor, whiteboards, real-time co-editing (Yjs, CRDT), PDF preview and generation.

  3. Realtime and media

Video via LiveKit and the in-house NES-Connect WebRTC/SFU stack, RTMP/SRT broadcasts with simulcast and SVC.

  4. Backend

Lovable Cloud (managed Supabase), PostgreSQL, Deno edge functions, Row-Level Security and full-text search.

  5. Quality and deployment

TypeScript in strict mode, Vitest, Playwright, pgTAP and axe-core tests, append-only SQL migrations and release gates in GitHub Actions.

  6. Access model

A free Starter plan, a Team plan and Enterprise deployments.

What was achieved

  • More than 20 modules in a single environment, including the Knowledge Hub, projects and sprints, chat, a virtual office, broadcasts, CRM, e-mail marketing, HR and payroll, BI, automations and approval chains.
  • An AI Act governance module for organisations that deploy AI tools.
  • A bilingual interface and data hosting in the European Union (Frankfurt).
  • A public meeting booking module through which anyone can arrange a call with the NES management board.

05Lesson

“A tool for a knowledge organisation should mirror its rhythm of work. I started Merydian by describing the NES processes and chose the technology to fit them afterwards; that is why the modules connect where the work connects.”

Igor Miasnikow

06Details

Project details

Four areas

Modules are grouped by what the organisation does, not by the type of tool.

  • Communication and broadcasting: chat, virtual office, live broadcasts, studio
  • Planning and coordination: Knowledge Hub, projects and sprints, whiteboards, bookings
  • Relationship development: CRM, e-mail marketing, networking
  • Operations and governance: HR and payroll, BI, automations, approval chains, AI Act

Security and compliance

The design assumptions include encryption of chat columns (AES-256), an audit log chain based on SHA-256, row- and role-level access control (RLS, RBAC) and hosting in the EU. The Enterprise plan provides for SAML SSO and SCIM.

09FAQ

Questions about Merydian

01.

What is Merydian?

Merydian is an integrated working environment for knowledge organisations: more than 20 modules in four areas – communication and broadcasting, planning and coordination, relationships, and operations and governance. Igor Miasnikow designed and built it end to end for New European Strategies.

02.

Where does Merydian store data?

In the European Union (Frankfurt). The design includes row- and role-level access control (RLS, RBAC), AES-256 encryption of chat columns and a SHA-256 audit log chain; the Enterprise plan provides SAML SSO and SCIM.

03.

How can I book a call through Merydian?

Through the public meeting booking module at merydian.app/meetings/igor-miasnikow, which schedules a conversation with the board of New European Strategies.
